Well, I won’t be on the program at Worldcon

I have been informed by programming at the Chicon/Worldcon that they don’t want me.

I have no problem if they didn’t find a place to put me, that they have lot more people. However, when I asked politely to be on the waitlist, when people cancel (COVID, etc), I got this:

"While there is a waitlist for panelists,
we have made a firm decision not to
include you on the program This decision
is final, and we appreciate you respecting
that."

I asked about that "firmly", and got
Part of our process is to run the name of
every participant we're considering for
inclusion on the program by Program Staff
and Convention Leadership. Multiple
people flagged you as someone whose
actions did not align with the values and
principles set out in the convention code
of conduct

Really. I have to assume this is based solely on an interchange last fall, when I volunteered to help work the Chicon party at the DC Worldcon, and made a comment about "you young fen..." and was publicly, IMO, attacked - from an email from the Chair:
A quick note here - and I'm going to call
you out publicly on this one, Mark. Your
comment about "these young fen are wimps"
is completely inappropriate. We do not
insult people here, even if your intent
was in jest

That's an insult? In the context of
"you young fen are all wimps, can't
talk until 4 in the morning"?

Maybe I'll throw a party, and do a
reading that they won't allow on
the program.

  1. i think this might be part of an ongoing attempt to atone for the days when asimov was apparently just wandering around groping everyone in sight with impunity
one man’s idle banter is another man’s hate speech, alas
